There was a time when mankind would tremble with even a minor sneeze of the superpowers, the US and the USSR. They had the nuclear weapons to annihilate every living thing in a single blow. But the Cold War era is over and over, too, is the threat of nuclear holocaust.
For a while, mankind could breath more freely. People started talking of a possible long world peace with the arms race between the Americans and the Soviet put to a halt. The disintegration of the USSR has completely ended its dream of world leadership.
The fear of annihilation has, however, stayed. Not from atomic weapons, not from biological and chemical weapons of mass destruction but from way-ward weather. Typhoons, fl oods, earthquake have become terrifying.
Albay experienced the terror of deadly floods when typhoon Reming came a year ago. To survivors, it was like the end of the world. As the flood waters roared and the thunderous winds hissed, the world shuddered.
Climate changed has been blamed for the warming of the earth’s atmosphere and the violent weather conditions unheard of years ago.

Who is to blame for what is happening to our planet? Man and his insatiable greed He is not happy with millions in his bands. He wants more. His plunderous nature is bringing the world to its final breath.
He continuous to pollute his environment in his mad pursuit of money. Those giant factories dirtying the atmosphere are owned by men with nothing in their minds but profi ts. They probably believe if the planets ends, they can escape to the moon.
When rich countries met not long ago to try to address the worsening weather problem, they conveyed a grim message to mankind. Stop polluting the earth or you will be sorry. That message appeared ignored.
And so each day we see the world coming nearer to its demise.
There are dire warnings. If the global warming is not arrested, according to scientists, the mountain of polar snows will melt and cause floodings in low-lying countries. Legazpi City is one of those expected to go underwater.
Heed the warnings and be saved.
Greed has plunged people into destruction. Man who is not contented with what is in his hand, craves for more. It is a disease, an incurable disease, alas.
A movie for children about a group’s search for the treasure in the lost Atlantis and its leader’s kidnapping of the King’s daughter in the lost city showed that man could not be trusted. Give him the chance to get rich, he will not let you down.
The movie had thrilled me no end perhaps because of the child in me. It was a movie of adventure and suspense of friendship and treachery.
The leader who kidnapped the princess was warmly welcomed by the King. But because he had nothing in his mind but the riches he could get his hands on if he had the princess under his power, he kidnapped her.
His attempt was thwarted by his own men who did not want him to escape with the princess out of Atlantis and destroy the city. He was killed in the subsequent battle.
Greed was what had drawn Adolf Hitler to wage war against his neighbors in Europe, his greed for power and world domination. He wanted mankind to bow to him.
Do you know that Hitler wanted to be like Jesus Christ? He ordered Heinrich Himmler, his doctor, to write the story of his life and picture him as the equivalent of Christ? Perhaps if Germany had won the war, Hitler would have proclaimed himself as the new Christ.
Hitler was a mad man of course.
