Is the month of February really the month of love? You cannot find the answer in this column since I am not in a position to answer that query. You be the judge!
Nowadays, the answers to our questions, be they important or trivial ones, can be found in the Internet. At the flick of our fingers, we can find answers to our inquiries via the internet.
Let me cite in particular the wikipedia (the free encyclopedia). By surfi ng the internet, I got information about the month of February. It defi nes the month of February as the second month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. It is the shortest month and the only month with fewer than thirty (30) days. February is named after the Latin term februum, which means purification, via the purification ritual Februa held on February 15 in the old Roman calendar. In common years, the month has 28 days. Leap year birthdays are usually celebrated on the 28th in a non–leap year. Some believe that February originally had 29 days ( 30 in a leap year), but that idea was invented by Sacrobosco during the Middle Ages.

The month of February is the topic of this column mainly because of its timeliness as many memorable events happen in February. They say that the month of February is the month of love. You have your own impression of what love means. I leave that matter for you to decide.
The Good Book states: “Now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love” (1 Corinthians 13:13). There is also that love that is being shared between husbands and wives. It also written in the Holy Bible that the husband should love his wife and the latter not only to love but to respect her husband.
Man-made laws also have provisions on “love”. To cite an example, we have the Family Code (Executive Order No. 209, as amended) which states that: The husband and wife are obliged to live together, observe MUTUAL LOVE, respect and fidelity, and render mutual help and support.”
I believe love can be manifested to the persons we hold dear not necessarily in the month of February. The point I am driving at is that there are other seasons wherein we can display our love and affection to our fellow human beings and our love can be 24/7, that is, twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.
In the month of February, events are celebrated or commemorated, whether we like or not, like birth anniversaries, valentine’s day, Ash Wednesday, though Ash Wednesday, falls on a different date each year because it is dependent on the date of Easter, it can occur as early as February 4 or as late as March 11, the Chinese New Year and other analogous events in the month of February. Do not get me wrong, important events are also being celebrated in other months.
In the month of February, though the shortest month, our people find time to celebrate the National Arts Month and the National Dental Health Month. It is also in the month of February that many of my officemates celebrate their natal anniversaries. I have just attended on February 6, the first Wednesday Holy Mass in honor of Our Mother of Perpetual Help which coincides with the Ash Wednesday, a holy day of obligation for all Catholics and other Christian denominations, which signals the start of the forty (40) days of Lent.
Again, I ask, “Is the month of February really the month of Love?” For me, love blooms depending on each and everyone of us.
