Police substations up in Caramoan

At least two PNP substations will be established in island barangays in Caramoan, Camarines Sur to improve police services and sustain the municipal government drive against illegal fishing.

This was disclosed by Caramoan Mayor Constantino Cordial, Jr. who said he has directed the establishment of police substations in Lahuy Island and at Baging Island, both of which are in the declared tourist zones of the municipality but which are considered hotbeds of illegal fishing activities.

Mayor Cordial said that instead of spending their time in the town proper police will now be routinely deployed in the barangays to curb the occurrence of crimes and discourage illegal fishing consisting mainly of blast fishing and fish poisoning using cyanide.

Cordial said he is also looking for alternative sources of livelihood to wean illegal fishers away from their trade.

Observers, however, said that unless the full force of the law is applied on illegal fishers the violators will persist to disregard government efforts to stop illegal fishing. Numerous efforts to provide alternative income and livelihood for violators have been exerted by national, provincial and municipal governments but failed because of the lure for fast income from illegal fishing.
