[AROUND BICOLANDIA] Supplemental feeding in Juban, Sorsogon

The Kabisig ng Kalahi, the UP Delta Sigma Alumni Association, New York Chapter and the Rotary Club of Salcedo, Makati spearheaded the launching of the Supplemental Feeding Program last month in barangay Boraboran, Juban, Sorsogon.

Ms. Victoria Wieneke, head convenor of the Kabisig ng Kalahi, said the program is a consolidated response of the government, the business and private sectors to seriously address the problem of malnutrition among pre-school children.

Wieneke said that the program which will benefit 30 children from Sitio Sangkayon and 30 from Boraboran proper, aims to lower the prevalence of underweight pre-school children, improve parenting capacities of parents and caregivers, and raise awareness on the importance of nutrition for the development of children to sustain the desired nutritional level.

Through the program, the children will be provided hot meals from Monday to Saturday for the period of six months from January 2008 to June 2008.

This Supplemental Feeding Program is a collaborative effort of Mead Johnson that will provide 117 kilos milk while the UP Delta Sigma Alumni Association New York Chapter appropriated P110,000 for the program.

Meanwhile the DSWD and the local government unit of Juban will be responsible for monitoring to ensure prompt program implementation.
