In Pili, C. Sur - Velarde among most outstanding citizens


Mayor Jose Velarde whose name was inadvertently omitted in the list of Pili Municipal Mayors in the preceding PENINSULA MONITOR issue due to a freak printing error has the singular distinction of serving further as vice governor of Camarines Sur after the end of his term following the 1986 EDSA Revolution.

According to incumbent Pili Mayor Alexis D. San Luis, Mayor Velarde was in fact one of the most distinguished residents of the capital town who brought honor and fame for the municipality as a soldier, mayor and vice governor of the province.

Actually the third Velarde to serve as Pili mayor he succeeded in 1968 his own brother, Juan Velarde who also served for one term from 1964 to 1967. Mayor Jose Velarde went on to serve as Mayor until 1979 when he was appointed as vice governor by President Marcos while Felix A. Fuentebella was appointed governor after serving several terms as congressman.

The first Velarde to serve as Pili mayor was Braulio Velarde from 1910 to 1911.

The first Pili mayor was Felix Canuto (1903-1905), followed by Teodorico Imperial (1906-1908), Juan Acepla (1908-1909), Braulio Velarde (1910-1911), Servillano Sanchez (1912-1916), Vicente Plopino (1916-1919), Felix Guevarra (1919-1922), Timoteo Pato (1923-1925), Pedro Berva (1925-1931/1942-1945);

Manuel Pelayo (1931-1937), Valentin Haelner (1938-1941), Gonzalo Aristoteles (1945-1946), Justo Casuncad (1946-1948/1949-1951), Luis Macandog (1952-1959), Timoteo Sarte (1960-1963), Juan Velarde (1964-1967), Jose Velarde (1968-1979), Anastacio Prila (1980-1986), Manuel Llaguno (1987), Jose Ariola (1988), Delfin Divinagracia, Jr. (1988-1998), Tomas Bongalonta, Jr. (1998-2007).
