Singapore leads Asean countries; Myanmar last

Tiny Singapore which has an area of only 692.7 square kilometers and a population of 4.5 million has the highest per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of $ 28,600 among ten Asean countries.

This is attributable largely to exemplary governance from the time Singapore was under the dynamic Lee Kuan Yew to present Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, both known for impeccable honesty, competence and dedication.

Singapore is in fact among the top three least corrupt countries in the world.

Philippines with a per capita GDP of $ 4,700 is ranked fifth among ten Asean nations. RP population is currently 89.5 million occupying 300,000 square kilometers.

Ranked second is Brunei with a per capita GDP of $ 23,600. It has an area of 5,770 square kilometer and a population of 379,000 only.

Malaysia is third with per capita GDP of $ 12,000. Malaysia has a land area of 329,750 square kilometers almost the same as the Philippines but it’s the same population is only 24.4 million.

Fourth is Thailand with a per capita GDP of $ 8,600. It has a population of 64.6 million occupying 514,000 square kilometers.

Indonesia, the most populous Asean country with 245.5 million people is sixth with a per capita GDP of $ 3,600. It also has the biggest land area at 1,919,440 square kilometers, more than five times the size of the Philippines.

Vietnam with a per capita GDP of $ 2,800 is seventh. It has land area of 329,560 square kilometers and population of 84.4 million which are almost the same as the Philippines.

Laos is ninth with a per capita GDP of $2,000. It has a land area of 236,800 square kilometers and a population of only 6.4 million.

Bringing up the rear is Myanmar formerly known as Burma, a country presently in deep trouble after monks led a protest March against its military–run government as a result of which many have been shot, killed and injured, beaten and arrested.

Myanmar has a per capita GDP of only $ 1,700. It has a population of 47.4 million in a land area of 678,500 square kilometers, more than twice the size of the Philippines.
