Barring unfavorable weather the repair and rehabilitation works along the Rolando Andaya, Sr. Highway from the Sipocot town to Del Gallego in Camarines Sur will be completed next month.
This was the assurance given by DPWH Regional Director Orlando B. Roces during an inspection at the project site by DPWH Secretary Hermogenes E. Ebdane, Jr. and Congressman Dato Arroyo (1st District, Cam. Sur) on September 3.
The ocular inspection by the cabinet offi cial was sought by Congressman Arroyo as commuters started to complain of the pace of rehabilitation work and more vehicular accidents were reported along the highway.
On August 28 four more persons died when a southbound van collided with a Raymond bus going to Manila near Agrupacion, Ragay.
During the visit Secretary Ebdane proposed that a weighing bridge be constructed at Calauag, Quezon to prevent overweight trucks from using the route which according to Director Roces cause rapid deterioration of the highway.
Andaya Highway has been designed for a maximum of 20 tons axle loaded vehicles but ten-wheeler trucks weighing around 30 tons pass through the highway defying DPWH warnings, Director Roces said.
Some portions of the Andaya Highway are embankments capable of specific weight limits only, it was also explained.
Director Roses said that after reblocking is completed Andaya Highway will have asphalt overlay making the route one of the best road segments in the country.
Meanwhile, Congressman Arroyo said he will tap barangay officials in maintaining traffic along the Andaya Highway as some road accidents are said to be caused by lack of flagmen. He said uniforms will be provided flagmen who will come from barangay tanods for motorists to easily identify them as legitimate traffic enforcers. (With reports from LS Macatangay, PIA Camarines Sur)
