[Editorials] Sex abuses in schools

The Camarines Sur Schools division Superintendent must act swiftly and decisively in the emerging cases of sexual abuses by teachers victimizing minors in public schools because these are grave offenses requiring attention more than other needs of the schools. The power to dispense administrative penalties is in the hands of the DepEd heirarchy.

Principals and supervisors who, knowing such aberrations, failed to act and even report to the Schools Superintendent are obviously also guilty of the dereliction of duty and should likewise be meted administrative sanctions. They are virtual accomplices in the commission of these horrifying crime against hapless schoolchildren.

Schools should be the mirror of the highest degree of morality necessary in the upbringing of the children entrusted to the care of teachers. When some teachers become beasts and schools become the haven of shamelessness they might as well close shop.

We have faith in the sense of righteousness of Schools Superintendent Emma I. Cornejo. We trust she will do her duty expected of her.

She has to do it now. This may be just the tip of the iceberg.
