[ Editorial ] Belief in God, Respect for People
Our basic criteria for the ideal public official, particularly the governor of the province, who should be elected on May 14 is simple: he should believe in God, he should respect people and he should not consider his office as the alternative business especially when one’s own ventures start to flounder.
Belief in God is not just a matter of verbal manifestations; it means adherence to all his Ten Commandments. Respect is too important because if one does not respect his own parents and elders in the family, how can one be expected to respect an ordinary constituent? Inevitably, a person of this character develops into a tyrant who demeans and degrades everyone around him on the pretext of pursuing his objective, which could, after all, be largely personal.
With the provincial government now heavily indebted after only three years of erratic development directions, not to mention reported dubious transactions, the next three years would be a very critical period that could see Camarines Sur sink deeper in the mire.
No, sir, those few foreigners and movie personalities invited to the Capitol at provincial government expense were not at all indicators of growth.
They were cover-ups for the many frustrations in governance in the present leadership of the province.
