Anti-Terrorism Law passed


The Anti-Terrorism Bill that has been long stalled in the Senate has finally been passed and enacted into law.

The new law gives the penalty of 40 years to convicted terrorists without parole.

Under the law, suspected terrorists may be arrested or detained without warrant but a person wrongfully arrested for terrorism will be compensated P500,000.00 a day for the period a person is detained or deprived of liberty without warrant once acquitted.

The measure has been described by President Arroyo as “an institutional landmark of the 13th Congress at a time when the world looks upon the Philippines as a strong global player in the fight against terror.”

She said an anti-terror law in the Philippines would complement the anti-terror agreement signed in Cebu last January by the Association of Southeast Asian Nation,
