UHS grads plan memorial building

This is the artist’s concept of the United High School Alumni Memorial Building to honor pioneers of the school like Eusebio Balcueva, Sr., Atty. Manuel Patrocinio, Arcadio Ampeloquio and Mayor Glicerio Alarkon, Sr. whose exemplary management made the school stand out as among the best not only in the province but throughout Bicol Region.

Alumni of the United High School in Caramoan, Camarines Sur now scattered all over the country and other parts of the globe are planning to put up a memorial building at the school compound to honor pioneers of the school, the first private institution in the Caramoan Peninsula.

MONITOR editor Dominador Alarkon, Jr., a member of UHS Class 1958 which will be having its golden jubilee reunion next year, has proposed the construction of a two-storey building which will be funded from contributions of all alumni from the very beginning of the school in 1948.

The proposed edifice will have six classrooms, one laboratory room, library, computer room and school administration office.

The building could cost about Php 10 Million according to architects and engineers tentatively commissioned to prepare the design and estimates, but with contributions coming in from alumni within a two-year period the amount is expected to be raised.

He said he has conferred with Manila-based alumni of the school, notably Atty. Glicerio P. Alarkon, Jr., who welcomed the proposal and who has started disseminating the information among graduates of the school in the Metro Manila area.

The memorial building plan will be formally launched within the Balik Caramoan Festival period from May 1 to 8, 2007 when hundreds of Caramoanons mostly graduates of the school are coming home from United States, Canada and other parts of the world including those from Metro Manila and other parts of the country.

Meanwhile, core members of UHS Class 1958 through coordinator Gregorio Recto will meet first week of March at the United High School for a conference regarding the proposal.

Among pioneers of the school who made the institution stand out among the best high schools in Camarines Sur and the Bicol Region were Eusebio Balcueva, Sr., principal and top-rate English and Mathematics teacher, Atty. Manuel Patrocinio, who headed the school board, Mayor Glicerio Alarkon, Sr., Arcadio Ampeloquio.
Present school principal is Jose P. Sancho, himself an alumnus of the school.
