Abaca fiber for car parts
Abaca fiber, one of the main export products from Bicol especially from the municipality of Tigaon to the Caramoan Peninsula towns and the island province of Catanduanes, may now be used as material for spare parts and accessories for motor vehicles.
This was revealed by Congressman Luis R. Villafuerte in a recent speech before the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc. and the Motor Vehicle Parts Manufacturers Association of the Philippines, Inc.
He said that high oil prices have compelled car makers to look for alternative lighter designs and fuel efficient accessories. Abaca fiber may be used for car interior and exterior components.
Villafuerte said Daimler Chrysler AG in Europe is already using abaca fiber in its parts and accessories.
He proposed that car makers in the country start using abaca fiber instead of imported seat cover fabrics and for interior carpeting and even dashboards. Abaca fiber may be blended with other materials.
Along with daughter Ms. Lalaine Villafuerte-Abonal, Cong. Villafuerte published in March last year a book on abaca highlighting the many uses of abaca fiber from twines, ropes, carpets to functional and decorative products, clothing material and handicrafts.
