[ Editorial ] What’s in the name?

A rose by any name smells just as sweet, and The CRANE Monitor which has been renamed Peninsula Monitor starting the issue should be just as aromatic. it is, however, more than just the invigorating scent wafting on the air.

This paper has metamorphosed into a full-fl edged community newspaper from a mere mouthpiece of the organization, Caramoan residents Association in Naga City and its environs (CRANE) and has been making waves not just in Camarines Sur but in at least three provinces in Bicol. Copies reach as far as the United States and Canada and government offices, especially those that have to do with the development aspirations of Caramoan Peninsula and the rest of Bicol. even Malacanang regularly receives copies of this publication. it is also on the CRANE website www.crane-caramoan.org.ph, a communication boon that not every provincial newspaper taps.

The new name thus gives this publication more appropriate vestments although it will primarily seek to continue to pursue the vision and ideals of the organization which footed the initial issue in April, 2006.

Henceforth, the financial, legal and other accompanying responsibilities shall be assumed by the publisher who anyhow almost single-handedly struggled to keep the paper going after the maiden issue last year.

It is difficult to predict how long Peninsula Monitor could last considering the dismal survival rate of provincial newspapers even here in Camarines Sur which used to fl aunt having the most member of print media among provinces in the country, counting of
course dubious fl y-by-night publications. But we are sufficiently determined to carry on, to navigate the rough seas and scale the mountains if our efforts could help accelerate the developmental growth of Caramoan

Peninsula which remains pathetically underdeveloped despite its huge resources in tourism potentials, mineral, marine and agricultural resources. And we shall not rest until we see the light on the horizon.
